SIMPATHY@ICIC16 - Barcelona on the road to better polypharmacy management in Europe
Welcome to the second issue of SIMPATHY - Stimulating Innovation Management of Polypharmacy and Adherence in THe ElderlY - newsletter. In this issue, we draw your attention to the International Conference on Integrated Care (ICIC16), May 23-25, in Barcelona, Spain. We highlight a special workshop chaired by our SIMPATHY partners and hosts from Barcelona (Jennifer McIntosh, Albert Alonso and Carles Codina). The workshop will reveal key messages from the case studies conducted over the last twelve months in eight European countries – United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Poland, Germany and Sweden - which focused on polypharmacy and adherence in the elderly.
SIMPATHY highlights important disparities in different European countries concerning best evidence-based practices and existing policies targeting polypharmacy management. Some of the partner countries already have well-established national policies with recommendations for appropriate polypharmacy management. Other partner countries have regional guidelines while some partner countries have yet to adopt a strategy addressing the issue of polypharmacy.
We hope the collaborative work of SIMPATHY including benchmarking, case studies and change management tools and recommendations will inspire policymakers, healthcare providers, educators, third sector and research communities. With freely available resources, links, publications and downloadable tools we want to make SIMPATHY.EU your first port of call.

SIMPATHY focus groups gathered in all partner countries
Polypharmacy is a major challenge in health management of elderly patients and patients with chronic conditions. SIMPATHY - Stimulating Innovation Management of Polypharmacy and Adherence in THe ElderlY project, funded from the European Union’s Health Programme (2014-2020), aims to identify and share best practices in order to stimulate, promote and support innovation in the management of appropriate polypharmacy and adherence therapy in the elderly. We aim to contribute to more efficient and sustainable healthcare systems across the EU. Focus group sessions and interviews were held as part of case studies in each partner country aiming to raise awareness, promote consensus and common vision towards betterpolypharmacy policies. These brought together Patient Representatives, policymakers, educators and healthcare professionals all invited to contribute their experience and expertise to SIMPATHY. SIMPATHY focus group sessions explored case study reports and questions that had emerged as a result of previous key informant interviews. Focus group sessions based on a detailed, agreed approach took place during February and March of 2016 in all project partner countries - Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom. Discussion focused on polypharmacy and adherence in the elderly; where policies exist asking what works; where policies did not exist asking why not and whether such a policy would be supported and accepted. Participants agreed that polypharmacy and non-adherence in the elderly is a widespread problem raising a sense of urgency to create tools and interdisciplinary strategies to address this challenge in all EU countries.
Towards better management of appropriate polypharmacy and adherence in the elderly in Europe we are inviting stakeholders from all EU countries to contribute to the identification of best practices.
Targeted communication with key stakeholders is at the heart of SIMPATHY. Engaging stakeholders to identify and prioritize best practices in polypharmacy and adherence in complex chronic patients is one of our missions. If you belong to Pharmacists Associations, Caregivers, Healthcare providers, Physicians, Nurses, Healthcare Commissioners, Policymakers, Politicians, Patients, Patients representatives and Education Regulators across the EU please participate in our benchmarking survey as part of our work package 6 (WP6).
